“Life Happens” Policy

An important part of professional and academic development is timeliness and keeping deadlines. However, I know sh#t happens sometimes and you may need some flexibility on my part.

For this reason, I will give each of you 1 “Life Happens” virtual token. You cannot trade or transfer tokens among each other. You may use your virtual token to:

I am only allowing you to request extensions for one assignment (the Lab 1 Research Report) because:

  1. You’re in charge of the due date for completing your response papers since you only need to write these for 10 of the 24 seminar meeting times. So it’s up to you to plan accordingly. (Also, the goal of papers is for these to be discussed during the same seminar meeting!)
  2. The Lab 2 (Final APA style manuscript) is the only other individually-written assignment. It is already set to be due on the latest day permissible by the College guidelines.
  3. Most other lab assignments in this class will be completed in pairs and reviewed during class time (seminar or lab) making it difficult to accomodate extensions — e.g., you cannot turn in a late project proposal because this is a group assignment and it would be unfair to your partner. If there are extenuating circumstances that require you and your partner to seek an extension, I will review the use of your token for these on a case-by-case basis.

  3. Provide a new deadline (date and time) that will allow you to succeed on this assignment (within 5 days).
  4. Please wait for confirmation from me to finalize an extension or revision request.

Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion

Our classroom does not exist in a vacuum: Historical and systemic forces shape our beliefs, interactions with each other, and even the content of the course. It is my intent that students from diverse backgrounds and perspectives be served by this course, that students needs be addressed both in and out of class, and that diversity be viewed as a resource, strength, and benefit. It is my goal to present materials and activities that celebrate diversity in multiple forms including gender, sexuality, ethnicity, race, culture, disability, age, and/or socioeconomic status. I will encourage us as a community of learners to operate from a place of cultural humility. Should you have any concerns about our classroom climate, please share these with me. Your thoughts and suggestions are warmly welcomed!

Public health in the classroom.

Over the two years we’ve all gotten a strong dose of a stranger-than-fiction reality. Though in many ways life seems to be back to normal, we must continue to exercise caution to keep our campus as healthy as possible. This includes the appropriate use of masks at all times while indoors.
